Bay park forward

Like any manoeuvre, you are looking to demonstrate good control and good observations throughout, responding to other road users if needed.

The key to a successful forward bay park is in your approach and start position.

Aim to get as far away from the target bay as possible and move at a crawling speed, this will give you more time to steer or make adjustments.

Some car parks will have two way traffic, others will have a one way system in place. If you need to move to the left or right to get into a good start position, make sure you do it safely by checking all around before swinging out, this includes mirror & blindspot checks.

When first line of your target bay passes under the bottom of you left mirror we can indicate and start to turn to the left, we do this at a very slow controlled pace and must check our left mirror and left blindspot.

When you are about to enter the bay, you can start taking the steering off and straightening up.

You must stop inside the bay, don't pass the line in front. Once in the bay, make the car safe by securing the parking brake and selecting neutral.

The criteria for this task is to park between the two bay lines. If we are more to one side or a little wonky, it doesn't matter. If you are not between the lines and need to make an adjustment, just let the examiner know what you are doing. Make the adjustment count, don't just pull back a few inches and shuffle back into the same spot, safely move the car all the way out of the bay and readjust.

Now we are in the bay, that is half of the task completed, we now need to reverse out using good observations throughout. When reversing we should look in the direction of travel, we need to rotate our body to look out of the rear window. Keep the wheel straight and reverse out half way, you can now start to turn the wheel, this should avoid swinging the front end of the car into any cars either side of you.

Keep reversing out, keeping a good lookout all around until you are facing the direction that you want to go. As you come to a stop, make the last point you are looking the rear window.

Before you drive away, carry out a 6 point check and reposition to your side of the lane if the traffic is two way.

To forward by park in a bay on the right is pretty much the same process. We will get a chance to practise both during your lessons.

Tips:

Slow feet - the slower you move, the easier it is to steer and the more time you will have to carry out good observation.

Fast Hands - steer at a fast pace to give you a greater turning angle. If you are steering, think about where you need to check next for any dangers.

Look in the direction you are travelling, when you begin to reverse, look out of the rear window, as you come to a stop, make this the last place you are looking.

Keep your eyes moving all around throughout.
