Turn in the road

The turn in the road (or three-point-turn) is no longer part of the UK driving test, but it's still a very useful manoeuvre to know as you will likely drive down a dead-end at some point.

Like any manoeuvre, you are looking to demonstrate good control and good observations throughout, responding to other road users if needed.

This manoeuvre can be broken down into 3 parts

  1. Driving forward
  2. Reversing
  3. Pull away safely

We can use our POM routine for each section.

By carrying this manoeuvre out at a very slow crawling pace will allow time to make good observations throughout and also to have time to steer.

Tips:

Slow feet - the slower you move, the easier it is to steer and the more time you will have to carry out good observation.

Fast Hands - steer at a fast pace to give you a greater turning angle. If you are steering, think about where you need to check next for any dangers.

Look in the direction you are travelling, when you begin to reverse, look out of the rear window, as you come to a stop, make this the last place you are looking.

Keep your eyes moving all around throughout.

Respond to other road users if needed.
