Your first lesson

Depending on your previous experience, your first lesson may differ from the following, but if you are a brand new driver, this is what it will likely be like.

You'll sit in the passengers side to start as your instructor will likely need to drive you to an area suitable for your first lesson.

Your instructor will then need to check a few things:

Licence check - The instructor will check your provisional licence and make a note of your licence number, please bring this with you.

Eyesight - Can you read a vehicle registration plate from a distance of 20.5 meters? If you were glasses or contact usually, wear these to your lessons.

Theory test progress - How’s your theory test going?

Previous experience – Have you driven before?

Exiting & entering the car - During your driving lessons, you may need to swap seats with your instructor. You’ll instructor will give a short briefing to ensure this is done safely.

If you want to be one step ahead on your first lessons, this is how we exit & enter the car safely…

  • Whether you’re in the drivers’ or passengers’ seat, always check your door mirror and look outside over your shoulder before opening the car door to make sure no traffic, cyclists or pedestrians are approaching.
  • When you exit the car, always close the door behind you.
  • Walk towards the back of the car, this will give you the best view of any approaching traffic.
  • Only walk towards and open the door if there’s no traffic or pedestrians approaching.
  • Once inside the car, close the door straight away.

Once we have completed these pre lesson checks & safety briefing, you’ll then learn:

1. How to get yourself correctly adjusted in the driver’s seat so you can reach the controls and be comfortable “the cockpit drill”.

2. What the main controls of the car are and how to operate them.

3. Your instructor will then teach you how to pull away and then stop safely. Depending on how you progress, you may learn how to steer around corners.
