Stopping safely

Aim: To pull over safely and stop by the left kerb.

After driving in first gear for a short while, keeping a distance of about 1 meter from the left kerb (our normal driving position), you’ll be instructed to pull over and stop on the left. We can use the MSPSL routine to safely stop on the left.

Mirror - We check our interior and left mirror, we are checking it’s safe to steer to the left.

Signal - Do we need to indicate? Will anyone benefit from our signal?

Position - We can start to steer 5mins towards the left kerb.

Speed - We can come off the gas, transfer our right foot to cover the brake pedal and start applying the brake if needed. The clutch will need to be pressed down at these slow speeds to prevent the engine from stalling.

Look - When stopping we can make good observations throughout the manoeuvre. When we have fully stopped, we apply the parking brake and select neutral and take our feet off of the pedals. “Making the car safe”.

“Are we stopping somewhere that is SAFE, CONVIENIENT & LEGAL?”

“Where would not be a SAFE, CONVIENIENT & LEGAL place to stop?”
