Parallel park

Like any manoeuvre, you are looking to demonstrate good control and good observations throughout, responding to other road users if needed.

The key to a successful forward bay park is in your approach and start position.

We need to pull up next to the car we are reversing around and aim to be about a doors width from them and perfectly parallel.

Keeping the steering wheel straight, we start reversing at a very slow crawling speed until the yellow marker on our passenger side door is in line with the rear bumper of the car we are parking around.

We then put the steering wheel on full lock to the left and continue reversing, the front of the car will now swing out into the road, it is important that we  check our left blindspot for oncoming traffic.

If we glace at our left wing mirror, we'll see how it appears the road is being replacement by the pavement, when we can't see the pavement anymore, this is when we start to straighten the steering wheel.

The criteria for this task is to park at least 30cms from the kerb and not further than a cars length from the car in front. If we are  a little wonky, it doesn't matter. If you need to make an adjustment, just let the examiner know what you are doing. If you are making an adjustment, make it count!

If you slowly hit the kerb during this manoeuvre, you will not gain any faults, if you hit the kerb at a speed that causes a bump, you may incur a driving fault. If any of your wheels touch the pavement, you will gain a serious fault.

Tips:

Slow feet - the slower you move, the easier it is to steer and the more time you will have to carry out good observation.

Fast Hands - steer at a fast pace to give you a greater turning angle. If you are steering, think about where you need to check next for any dangers.

Look in the direction you are travelling, when you begin to reverse, look out of the rear window, as you come to a stop, make this the last place you are looking.

Keep your eyes moving all around throughout.
