Peep & creep

Peep & creep is a technique we often need to use when driving and involves using good clutch control to carefully and slowly move forward at a junction to improve our view.

When the view to our left or right (or both) at a junction is not good, we call this a “closed junction”. It could be due to walls, hedges or even parked cars.

When a junction has good view on approach, we call this an “open junction”.

When we approach a open junction, we can often aim to be in 2nd gear and keep the car rolling forward. If it is safe to pull out, we can then steer around the corner. If it's not safe to pull out, we drop the clutch pedal and select 1st gear.

If we are approaching a closed junction, we my need to slow down and drop into 1st gear straight away to give us better control and more time to make a decision when pulling out.

If we get to closed junctions and cannot see enough to make a decision if it's safe to pull out, we'll need to "peep & creep". Just keep slowly moving forward until your view improves and you can decide if it is safe to pull out.

Look out for other traffic established on the road, that may notice that you are struggling to get out. They may stop to give you a better chance of emerging safely. Remember, it is your decision to pull out, just because other drivers slow down, stop, wave you on or flash their lights doesn't mean it's safe to pull out.
